Christmas and New Year on Lake Como: Markets, Events, Fireworks

  • December 1, 2025

Christmas or New Year on Lake Como? Great idea! Christmas and New Year are a magical time to visit Lake Como, one of Italy’s most beautiful and serene destinations. Nestled in the Lombardy region of northern Italy, Lake Como is surrounded by stunning mountains and picturesque towns, making it the perfect place to celebrate the holiday season.

Como has the most beautiful light installations in the squares of piazza Volta, piazza Duomo, and piazza San Fedele. A Christmas market and ice rink are open in Como’s Piazza Cavour. At the Christmas market in Como, the local artisans sell souvenirs, jewellery, toys, sweets, farm cheeses, and sausages. And, of course, hot mulled wine. One of the best ways to experience Christmas on Lake Como is to stroll through one of the festive markets throughout the season. Magic houses, festive illumination, Lake Como, and snow-capped mountain peaks create an unforgettable winter experience.

The largest Christmas Market on Lake Como is held in the charming town of Como, which is also the largest town on the lake. The market runs from late November to early January and features dozens of stalls selling everything from handmade crafts and decorations to traditional Italian sweets and treats. It’s the perfect place to pick up a few souvenirs or stock up on holiday gifts for friends and family back home.

The traditional Christmas festival of magic lights runs annually from the end of November till the middle of January.

Another great way to experience the holiday season on Lake Como is to attend one of the many festive concerts and events that take place throughout December. In addition, many of the region’s churches and cathedrals host beautiful performances of classical music and choral singing, while local theatres and performance venues offer holiday-themed plays and shows.

Of course, no Christmas celebration in Lake Como would be complete without a traditional Italian feast, and Lake Como has no shortage of excellent restaurants serving delicious holiday dishes. Many restaurants offer special holiday menus that feature local ingredients and traditional recipes, making for a truly authentic Italian Christmas meal.

On the shores of Lake Como, the village of Brienno will host its charming Christmas markets beneath the old porticos on the weekends of 29–30 November and 6–7–8 December 2025. Picture a maze of twinkling lights, gentle music and the scent of the lake in the air, where local artisans showcase their handmade creations and Father Christmas’s House awaits, tucked away among ancient stone alleyways.

Beloved by those in search of authenticity and poetry, Brienno offers a truly enchanting festive escape — far removed from the bustle of the big commercial Christmas fairs.

If you’re lucky enough to be in Lake Como for New Year’s Eve, you’re in for a treat. The lake is famous for its spectacular fireworks displays, which take place in many of the region’s towns and villages. However, the most extensive and impressive show is held in Como, where fireworks light up the sky above the lake, and a festive atmosphere fills the streets.

Spending Christmas and New Year on Lake Como is more than a holiday—it’s an experience where Italian traditions meet timeless scenery. After exploring festive lights, nativity displays, and Lake Como Christmas markets, the season naturally flows into joyful New Year celebrations. From lakeside fireworks and villa dinners to quiet winter walks along the water, every moment captures the unique charm of Lake Como in winter. Whether you come for shopping, dining, or simply soaking in the serene atmosphere, the lake offers a setting that feels both festive and intimate. It’s this blend of celebration and beauty that makes Lake Como a magical holiday destination.
