Lake Como Christmas: Brienno Revives Its Living Nativity

As the festive season arrives on Lake Como, the charming village of Brienno once again becomes a magical setting that seems lifted straight from a Christmas card. From 29–30 November and 6–8 December 2025, this lakeside gem will host the 11th edition of the Christmas Markets under the Porticoes, a much-loved event that fills the narrow alleys with light, laughter, and the scent of Christmas.

A Fairytale Village on Lake Como

Perched between the mountains and the lake, Brienno is one of the most atmospheric and authentic villages on Lake Como. With just over 300 residents, its stone houses, arched porticoes, and steep, winding lanes form a perfect backdrop for a traditional Christmas celebration. During the markets, every corner glows with warm lights, while the fragrance of mulled wine, roasted chestnuts, and freshly baked sweets drifts through the air.

Organised by the “Noi di Brienno” Association, with support from the Circolo AICS, the Alpini Group, and the Società Filarmonica, this event has become a highlight of the local festive calendar. Under the porticoes, visitors will find craft stalls offering handmade decorations, unique gifts, and local delicacies — the perfect opportunity to discover traditional craftsmanship and the flavours of the region.

Festive Spirit for All Ages

The Christmas Markets in Brienno are designed for everyone to enjoy. Children can visit the House of Father Christmas, where they’ll be greeted with sweet treats and invited to send their letters. One of the event’s most fascinating features is the chance to explore the Mina del Puncett Gallery, open from 2:00 to 5:00 pm. This hidden tunnel system beneath the village reveals a secret side of Brienno, with stunning views overlooking the lake.

Visiting Brienno’s Christmas Markets

The markets will open daily from 11:00 am to 9:00 pm, with a shuttle service operating from Tavernola to Argegno between 10:30 am and 9:30 pm — making it easy for visitors to reach the village even during peak times. A stroll through Brienno at Christmas means discovering quiet courtyards, glittering reflections on the lake, and a festive atmosphere filled with authenticity and warmth.

Lake Como’s Winter Magic

Beyond Brienno, the whole Lake Como region celebrates the season with style — from Christmas Afternoon Tea at Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo to the Magical Light Festival in Como city, which attracts thousands of visitors each year with its spectacular illuminations and festive fair. But it’s in small villages like Brienno that you can truly feel the soul of an Italian Christmas — where tradition, community, and the natural beauty of Lake Como in winter create an experience unlike any other.
