On Saturday, 7th September 2024, the Como FAI Delegation will present an exceptional event in the “Perle del Lago” series. This time, the participants will have the rare opportunity to visit the Writer’s Nest, also known as “Il Rudere,” a private gem on Lake Como that offers a captivating fusion of history and natural beauty. This villa, possessing an impressive collection of antiques and a secluded location, has recently gained global notoriety. It served as a hidden refuge for the titular spies in the new Prime Video series Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Furthermore, rumours are circulating that Taylor Swift may be interested in acquiring this exceptional property.

The event, held in the beautiful and unique Lake Como location, will highlight the significance of the Moltrasio stone. This historic material has been crucial for centuries in shaping the Lake Como region’s economy. Extracted from local quarries and transported via traditional boats known as comballi, Moltrasio stone was a cornerstone of the lake’s architectural heritage.

The Writer’s Nest is an old tollhouse, typical of the region, nestled in the centre of a former stone quarry. With its towering, steep rock walls, the quarry now features a beautifully landscaped garden that extends down to the lake. This enchanting setting offers a unique sense of peace, framed by the lake and mountains. The residence has been meticulously restored stone by stone, creating a cosy and charming retreat that captures the essence of Lake Como.

Journalist and author Giuseppe Guin will personally host the event. He has found inspiration in this serene location for many of his works, all set against the backdrop of Lake Como and its people. An expert from the Eco-Museum of Moltrasio Stone will also be on hand to delve into the history of stonecutting in the region, from extraction techniques to the role it played in the local economy and architecture.
