A Journey Through Time: The History of Castello di Vezio

The origins of Castello di Vezio are shrouded in mystery, with some historians suggesting that the fortification dates back to the late Roman era. The castle’s strategic location, which offers commanding views of Lake Como, supports the idea that it may have once served as a military outpost, protecting the vital route between Bellano and Esino Lario. Later, during the Lombard period, legend has it that Queen Theodolinda, a prominent figure of the early Christian era in northern Italy, spent her final years in the nearby village of Perledo. She is believed to have commissioned the castle and other local landmarks, though these stories remain entwined with myth.

Throughout the centuries, the castle has seen a variety of uses and occupants. By the 12th century, refugees from Comacina Island, displaced by the war with Como, sought shelter in Varenna and contributed to the fortification of Castello di Vezio. During the Middle Ages, the castle’s stronghold was expanded and served as a refuge for the local population during times of conflict. Over time, it passed through the hands of noble families, including the Sfrondati and the Serbelloni, whose descendants continue to own the property today.

A Castle with a Lake Como View

One of Castello di Vezio’s most striking features is its panoramic terrace. From here, visitors are treated to a stunning vista of Lake Como, with its two branches stretching out below—Lecco to the left and Como straight ahead. The terrace provides views of the Bellagio peninsula, and landmarks like Villa Carlotta and the villages of Cadenabbia and Menaggio come into view in the distance.
Castello di Vezio is a popular spot for photography, as the sweeping scenery is nothing short of majestic, particularly at sunset when the colours of the lake and sky blend into a golden masterpiece.

The Enchanting Gardens above Lake Como

The gardens of Castello di Vezio are as captivating as the castle itself. Visitors walking through the grounds will notice the diverse plant life influenced by the unique microclimate created by the lake. On the northern side, the cooler, alpine climate nurtures chestnut, hazel, and fir trees, while the southern-facing slopes benefit from the milder Mediterranean climate, where olive, agave, palm, and rosemary thrive.
In fact, Castello di Vezio is home to the northernmost olive grove in Italy, which produces a highly regarded extra virgin olive oil with a DOP (Denomination of Protected Origin) status. This oil is known for its low acidity and distinctive flavour, making it a prized product available for purchase on-site.

Cultural Experiences at the Castle

The castle is not just a historical relic but alive with cultural events and exhibitions. One of the most unique experiences offered at the castle is the “Ghosts of Vezio”, a series of eerie sculptures crafted each summer with the help of visitors. These volunteers are covered in plaster and gauze and must stand still for an hour to create the ghostly figures that adorn the castle grounds until the winter weather eventually takes them down.
Additionally, the castle often hosts temporary art exhibitions, offering a space where history and contemporary creativity intersect. Local artist Luigi Gambato also contributes his wooden sculptures, adding another layer of charm to the castle’s atmosphere.

Exploring the Castle’s Inner Secrets

A walk through the castle reveals much about its storied past. The tower can be accessed by a steep stone staircase, crossing a drawbridge that leads to the summit. Once at the top, visitors are rewarded with an unparalleled 360-degree view of the lake and surrounding mountains. Inside the tower is a display of medieval weaponry, clothing, and armour, giving visitors a glimpse into life during the castle’s height as a military fortress.
Beneath the castle, visitors can explore the Cadorna Line tunnels, a network of World War I-era fortifications built to defend against a potential German invasion. These tunnels, while weathered, still provide a fascinating glimpse into more recent military history, although the castle management playfully warns guests to expect some light-hearted surprises in these underground passages.

Meet Artù, The Castle’s Resident Owl

A visit to Castello di Vezio wouldn’t be complete without meeting Artù, the castle’s beloved Eurasian eagle owl. Artù was rescued from a negligent situation and, due to his fearful nature and inability to survive in the wild, now resides at the castle under the care of staff. While Artù is a striking presence, guests are kindly asked not to disturb him, especially if accompanied by dogs.

Sustainable Initiatives and the Castle’s Botanical Garden

In recent years, Castello di Vezio has strongly emphasised sustainability and environmental stewardship. The gardens are now a testament to this, focusing on maintaining biodiversity, conserving water, and eliminating harmful pesticides. Special attention has been given to attracting pollinators, and “bug hotels” have been introduced to encourage the presence of beneficial insects.

The botanical garden within the castle grounds showcases a wide array of Mediterranean and local plants, creating a peaceful retreat for visitors to explore. From aromatic herbs to succulents, the gardens are designed with beauty and ecological responsibility.
