The Velarca: A Floating Masterpiece Returned to Lake Como

The Velarca, a unique houseboat designed by the Milanese architecture firm BBPR in 1959, has been restored to its original mooring in Ossuccio on Lake Como. Now open to the public, this floating home represents a fusion of modernist design and traditional craftsmanship, offering a fresh perspective on mid-century architecture. Donated to the FAI (Fondo per l’Ambiente Italiano) in 2011 by Aldo and Maria Luisa Norsa, the Velarca has undergone years of meticulous restoration to reclaim its original charm.

The boat was initially commissioned by Fiammetta and Emilio Norsa as a summer retreat where they could host friends and family. Unlike typical leisure homes, the Velarca was designed to welcome prominent figures of Italian culture, including architect Gio Ponti, poet Eugenio Montale, and artist Lucio Fontana. BBPR, the architectural team behind Milan’s iconic Torre Velasca, created a structure that seamlessly integrated contemporary design with the natural setting of Lake Como.

The Velarca is based on the Corriera Tremezzina, a 19-metre larian gondola built in 1911, which originally transported goods and passengers across the lake. BBPR transformed the vessel by adding a functional living space, combining modernist principles with respect for local history and the surrounding environment.

Restoring a Piece of History

When the Velarca was donated to FAI, its condition had deteriorated significantly, necessitating extensive repairs. The restoration process began in 2013 at the Ernesto Riva shipyard in Maslianico, where the hull and decks were reconstructed to address structural issues. The living quarters were carefully restored, with historical photographs guiding the recreation of furnishings and details to maintain the original mid-century aesthetic.

The restoration also included improvements to its surroundings. A new docking system was created, featuring a renovated pier and an additional landing area to accommodate visitors arriving by boat. The nearby garden, originally a simple green space, has been partially redeveloped, with plans for a more structured design inspired by BBPR’s vision set for completion next spring.

A New Destination for Lake Como

With its reopening, the Velarca becomes one of 71 heritage sites managed by FAI, joining local landmarks such as Villa del Balbianello. It adds a new cultural dimension to Lake Como, providing visitors with a unique opportunity to explore the intersection of architecture, design, and the lake’s storied history.

Visitors to the Velarca can engage with its story through podcasts and a video presentation displayed on a vintage 1960s television, which recounts the evolution of the project and the restoration journey. These elements offer insight into the boat’s transformation from a working vessel to an architectural icon and cultural meeting place.
