Tucked along the western shore of Lake Como, between Como and Argegno, Brienno is one of the lake’s most authentic and least-known villages. Unlike the grand villas and glamorous resorts that have made Lake Como famous worldwide, Brienno tells a different story — one of stone, silence and centuries-old traditions.
Built vertically against the mountainside, the village appears to rise directly from the water. Its tightly woven network of stairways, vaulted passages and narrow lanes reflects its medieval origins, when settlements were designed for defence, practicality and community life. There are no wide promenades or elegant piazzas here; Brienno developed as a working lakeside village, shaped by fishermen, boatmen, craftsmen and traders.
For centuries, its strategic position near the Swiss border played a significant role in local history. During the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Brienno became associated with cross-border smuggling — a clandestine yet often romanticised chapter of Lake Como’s past. Under the cover of darkness, goods were transported across the lake and along hidden mountain paths, creating stories that still linger in local memory.
Today, Brienno remains largely untouched by mass tourism. Its atmosphere is intimate and contemplative, offering visitors the rare opportunity to experience Lake Como beyond the postcard image.
What to Expect on the Tour
This guided experience invites you to explore Brienno from the inside, understanding not only its architecture but also its social and historical identity.
You will walk slowly through medieval stone passages, discover hidden courtyards and enjoy unexpected openings onto the lake. Along the way, your guide will share stories of daily life, local traditions and legends — including tales that blur the line between documented history and oral storytelling.
Exclusive Opening of the Mina Gallery
During the tour, participants will also enjoy an extraordinary opening of the Mina Gallery, a site usually inaccessible to the public. Carved directly into the rock, this passage tells a lesser-known yet fascinating chapter of the village’s history. Suspended between human ingenuity and dramatic landscape, it adds depth and surprise to the experience.
We will walk at a relaxed pace through medieval architecture, scenic viewpoints and stories of lake and mountain life. You will discover an authentic Lake Como village that has remained outside the main tourist routes — and precisely for this reason, has preserved its true character.
This is not simply a walk through a picturesque village. It is an immersion into a quieter, more authentic side of Lake Como — one that reveals how geography, history and community have shaped life on the lake for centuries.
