Experience Lecco: Climb the 400 Steps of the Bell Tower

  • March 16, 2025 14:30 - March 30, 2025 15:30

Discover the iconic Bell Tower of the Basilica di San Nicolò, affectionately known as the Matitone (pencil) due to its unique shape, standing at an impressive 96 metres, the same height as London’s famous Big Ben. This remarkable structure is one of Lecco’s most cherished symbols.

The bell tower, the second tallest in Italy and one of the most prominent in Europe, is steeped in history. It rises above a circular bastion built in the 15th century to enhance the defensive system of the fortified village. Visitors can still see remnants of the old city walls beneath the tower, visible from the parking area, along with the surrounding moat.
