Lake Como’s Challenge: A Swim to Cross the Lake

  • July 28, 2025 20:00 - 21:30

The Moltrasio Swim “Traversata del Lago di Como” has transformed from a humble beginning into a celebrated annual event. Originating in the 1990s, this event was the brainchild of Mario Arrighi. During one of his leisurely excursions on the lake with friends, Arrighi famously called the Ristorante Il Vapore in Torno from the Lido di Moltrasio, asking, “Is the perch risotto ready? We’ll dive in and be at the table in 20 minutes!” The swim to the other shore ended with the restaurant owner waiting with a hose for a quick rinse before they sat down to enjoy their meal.

Over the years, this casual tradition evolved, drawing more and more participants. What began as a friendly swim has now become a structured event, attracting around 600 swimmers in recent editions. The Moltrasio Swim has firmly established itself as a must-attend event for Lake Como enthusiasts.

The Moltrasio Swim takes place on the last or second-to-last Monday of July. Registrations open at the beginning of July, and you can secure your spot online.

On the Day of the Swim

The gathering point is at the Canottieri Moltrasio (Via Bellini 6) at 18:00 for check-in and buoy collection. Participants then proceed to the Piazza San Rocco dock, where boarding begins at 19:00. The swim back to Moltrasio starts around 20:15. Remember to check in at Moltrasio to validate your registration and collect your buoy.

Parking and Transport

Parking is available in public car parks along the lakeside road. On the evening of the swim, Via Regina Vecchia will be one-way towards Carate Urio, providing additional parking options along the road. There’s also parking near the Moltrasio cemetery. Given the limited parking spaces, consider using small cars or motorbikes and car-sharing with other participants. Motorbikes have ample space at the end of the Canottieri road.

During the Swim

Safety is a priority, and rescue canoes and dinghies accompany the swimmers. If you need assistance, simply raise your hand to signal the nearest boat. The return trip is to the Canottieri pier, guided by a beacon light. Participants can leave personal belongings in the gym or changing rooms, though these areas are not supervised, so avoid bringing valuables.

Post-Swim Celebration

After the swim, the festivities continue with a dinner organised by the Canottieri Moltrasio in Piazza San Rocco. Please note that dinner is not included in the registration fee. Changing rooms and outdoor showers are available after the swim.

For First-Time Participants

While the Moltrasio Swim is not competitive, there’s often a spirited start. If it’s your first time, especially if you’re with children, consider letting the initial group start first. Enjoy the swim at your own pace, and join in the camaraderie of this cherished tradition.

Join the Moltrasio Swim, where tradition meets excitement on the stunning shores of Lake Como. Whether you’re a seasoned swimmer or a first-time participant, this event promises a memorable experience steeped in local charm and community spirit.
