Prepare for an unforgettable evening filled with entertainment, history, nature, breathtaking views of Como, and a touch of mystery at Castello Baradello. Perched high above the city of Como and the first basin of Lake Como, the castle’s ancient walls have witnessed significant historical events—and some spooky tales involving mysterious guests.
Picture the scene: With torches in hand, you will journey through the woods that separate the city from Castle Hill, guided by a tour leader. Together, you will unlock the old doors of the castle and slowly uncover its history, secrets, and the many unsettling legends that shroud it in mystery.
For those brave enough to climb to the top of the 30-metre tower, suspended between the forest and the night sky, the reward will be a breathtaking view of the city lights and the shimmering waters of the Lake Como below.
Baradello Castle, a timeless symbol of Como, stands as a testament to the rich history of the Lake Como region. Originally constructed by Emperor Frederick Barbarossa on ancient fortifications, its commanding position has allowed it to oversee the city and the first basin of Lake Como for centuries.
From the top of its towering structure, the breathtaking view stretches far and wide, while its ancient walls have borne witness to all the key historical events of Northern Italy.
Set amidst the lush greenery of the protected natural park, Spina Verde, the castle is accessible via enchanting walking trails from various points in Como. A visit to Baradello Castle is not just a historical exploration but a delightful journey through the natural beauty of the Lake Como region.
The last owner, Teresa Rimoldi, with no heirs, named the Sant’Anna Hospital as her universal heir in her will. By virtue of this legacy, in 1927, Baradello Castle and its adjoining lands became the property of the Municipality of Como.
During the Second World War, in August 1943, the tower housed a platoon from the 3rd Bersaglieri Regiment stationed in Milan, tasked with monitoring potential paratrooper drops.
Professor Luigi Mario Belloni supervised a study and restoration campaign to consolidate and recover the structure in 1971.
The castle, which can now be visited for a fee and by reservation, is part of the Parco della Spina Verde, and its image has been chosen as the symbol of the park.
