Schignano Carnival Near Lake Como: What to Know

The Schignano Carnival 2026 will officially begin with its first public event on Sunday, February 8, 2026, bringing back one of the most authentic and atmospheric traditions in the Lake Como area. Held in the village of Schignano, in the heart of Val d’Intelvi, this historic carnival is famous for its handcrafted wooden masks and the iconic characters Brut and Mascarun, attracting visitors from across Italy and abroad.

Children’s Carnival – Sunday, February 8, 2026

The opening event is the traditional Children’s Parade, starting from Piazza San Giovanni (Occagno). The parade takes place in the afternoon and features miniature versions of the traditional masks alongside children in modern costumes. The procession will reach Auvrascio and return to the starting point. At the end of the event, participants will be offered hot chocolate and traditional chiacchiere pastries at the headquarters of the Società di Mutuo Soccorso di Retegno.

Main Parades – Saturday, February 14 and Tuesday, February 17, 2026

The most anticipated moments of the Carnevale di Schignano 2026 will take place on Saturday, February 14 and Tuesday, February 17. Both days feature the main masked processions, traditionally starting from Piazza San Giovanni (Occagno) with gathering around 1:30 PM and parade departure at approximately 2:30 PM. The parade crosses the village and its hamlets, creating an intense atmosphere that blends tradition, satire, and community identity.

On Saturday evening, celebrations continue with local food and music, offering typical dishes such as polenta, luganighetta sausage, tripe, and cheeses, followed by dancing and entertainment.

Shrove Tuesday Finale – “Fuga del Carlisepp”

The carnival’s dramatic finale takes place on Tuesday, February 17, with the famous “Fuga del Carlisepp”, one of the most symbolic rituals of the event. The carnival effigy is captured and burned during the final bonfire, closing the celebrations with music, dances, and a powerful traditional atmosphere.

Throughout the carnival days, local associations will run food stalls along the parade route, offering visitors the chance to enjoy local specialties.
