From 29 May to 27 September 2026, the city of Como hosts Turner: The Enchantment of Lake Como and the Italian Landscape, a major exhibition dedicated to J.M.W. Turner (1775–1851), the leading figure of English Romanticism. Curated by Elizabeth Brooke and organised by the City of Como in collaboration with Tate London, the exhibition brings together masterpieces from the renowned British collection to explore the artist’s formative journey through Italy and the profound influence of the Italian landscape on his artistic development.
Presented across the Broletto Palace and the Civic Art Gallery of Como, the exhibition highlights Turner’s fascination with Lake Como, featuring watercolours that capture the lake’s changing light, reflections and atmospheric effects. Additional works document the artist’s travels and include studies of iconic landmarks such as Rome’s temples. Through these paintings, visitors can trace how the Grand Tour shaped Turner’s vision and contributed to his reputation as the celebrated “painter of light”.
The exhibition ticket also includes access to a related display at San Pietro in Atrio, offering a broader perspective on Turner’s relationship with Italy and the landscapes that inspired generations of artists.
